Working on the Medical Team for IBJJF Worlds 2015 in Long Beach, CA.
I had the opportunity to be part of the medical team at the 2015 IBJJF Worlds tournament back in May at Long Beach State University. This was my second time being part of this team. The medical team is lead by Dr. Ethan Kreiswirth, PhD in athletic training and a BJJ black belt himself. What I love about being part of the team is I get to see acute injuries on the mat. Because I am not a athletic trainer, the quickest I get to see fresh injuries is usually the following day. Another reason is I get front row seats to all the action.
This year's tournament did not disappoint in regards to injuries. Besides the usual minor cuts and joint sprains, there was at least 1 elbow dislocation and a few ACL tears on the mat.
The tournament was 4 days long but I was only available for Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was busy because there were 10 matches going on at the same time. Sunday was very different. Because it was the black belt finals, there were 2 matches at most going on at one time. It was a great opportunity for me to get some great pictures of the legends of our sport.
